Celebrity self help

Is this even a real book? I can assure you that not only is it 100% real but I have read every single page.

This is one of my most prized thrift shop book finds. Check the cover, I mean it's hot pink, she's shaking her finger menacingly, she has a chain holding her glasses to her neck, a cameo brooch, the worlds fluffiest hair and the title is clumsy. It's perfect. Horribly perfect.

The cover design aside... This is essentially a self help, a sort of "how to live your life" book with completely irrelevant information on how to handle fame if it happens to find you at the ripe age of 60+... Because we've all been there, am I right?

The pearls of wisdom flow in this book like the waterfall in Peter Andre's Mysterious Girl video clip*. Here's a good one:

"Do men get sick differently from women? Of course. Women get sick. Men lose their minds"

Oh Estelle, you modern woman. What else can you tell us about men and women?

"Men are stronger, they do war things better and fix pipes better"

War things. Amen.

*I hope you appreciated that little euphemism as much as I did. I laughed to myself at my own comic genius. Oh you're so smart and charming.

It's a Boycott

Nothing better than a little scandal in the mad world of (m)admen. B&T reports further advertising boycotts on Kyle Sandilands. Brands that have never wavered over the moral boundary line are taking a stand. The roster includes Coles, Bunnings, Vodafone and McDonalds to name a few.

Giddy up

Take a look at this krazy kat. I love ye olde magazines for the old advertisements. Geez louise, the plethora of coupons included in these dinosaur mags - it's little wonder baby boomers have George Costanza sized wallets full of them. Proof that advertising can persuade the culture a whole generation.

Project: Cosby sweaters

Children of the 80's all this winter madness is surely bringing on a bout of nostalgia? Warm your weary heart with some Cosby Show inspired art! This blurrrrger has started a project - draw all Cosby Show sweaters (Osee above). Ch-ch-check the site:  http://thecosbysweaterproject.tumblr.com/

My oh my is it grand!

I, on the other hand am a kidling of the 90's* so I'm going to catch up on some action in the Walsh house on Beverly Hills 90210.

Ta ta!

*I can still appreciate a good Cosby sweater though

Vokab-ul-lairy

I've been saving this up for a rainy day, and while it isn't raining it is a boooooooring Monday.

So, as for this subject image... the biggest celebrity gossip news this month, Arnie and his scandalous cheating ways (I mean, the house keeper? so delightfully cliche!). Though, that isn't actually what I've brought you here to discuss, the reason for our chat - the Herald Sun's unimaginative headline of "The Cheatinator". My overseas spy's tell me that the herald Sun equivalent in London titled their story "The Fornicator", HS why didn't you think of this one? "Fornicator" is actually a word, surely that would be preferable to "The Cheatenator". Honestly... in an age where MS Office has built-in thesaurous what kind of excuse can there be?!

Flipping FANTASTIC!

The latest blog on my reading list  is www.manrepeller.com created by the hilarious man repelling  Leandra Medine of NYC. Basically this is a fashion blog about garments and styles that girls love and guys hate, for example puffy shirts.

Such a simple concept for a blog and every entry is such a delight to read. I am so happy the lovely Garance Dore (cos she's my friend now... yep...) led me to this blog. Also I've got a crooked-up neck so I'm balancing my head on pillows and compy on right angles trying to occupy myself by scouting new blogs while I'm up to my fringe in painkilling numbness.

And... as a fellow man repeller, you don't have to know me well to be aware of some of my favourite items of cloth such as... my massive amounts of velvet items, my indian looking slipper shoes (officially called Minnetonka's), baggy shirts and loosy goosey dresses.

So go read and be good xx

Makin' house

One of my most treasured thrift store finds, Laura Ashley home decorating book from the late 80's. The decor is so reminiscent of Adam and Barbara Maitland of Beetlejuice, you know, before they died and the Deetz's move in and make the house all trendy 80's (AKA - electric colours and geometric shapes).

The whole aesthetic of this period in home decorating was so frilly, fru-fru, patchwork-y. Like Little House on The Prairie but amped up to feedback level. Looking at the images in this book I can just smell the pot-pouree.

Lame-o

This is a little embarrassing...  This is something I started doing when I was depressed and living inter-state was to escape my current reality for a short time. I really didn't need anything too emotionally draining or too intellectually challenging as I was reading lit at uni and exhausted myself looking for meaning in novels. So..... I started reading 80's teen romance novels, shameful I know.

BUT, look I can rationalise my actions:

  1. I was a poor, no cash student and the local salvo's was selling these for something like $0.60
  2. I was studying, and couldn't afford to "get lost" in a good book and these literary master peices were in 12 pt by 200 pages and only took... about an hour to read which made a good study break
  3. I was desperately unhappy at the time and these books offered corny lines and happy endings
  4. Have a look at the titles and cover images. HI-LAR-I-OUS!
So there.
Anyway, for what it's worth "Heart & Soul" (pictured) was especially lame.

Bonnie Prince, Richard

"I don’t see any difference now between what I collect and what I make. It’s become the same. What I’m collecting will, a lot of times, end up in my work." - Richard Prince

Richard Prince is a collector, hoarding all kinds of nick-nacks, but most importantly he is a book collector. Prince often references books directly in his artwork. All kinds of books from J.D. Salinger to Jim Morrison's poems.

Prince features books in his art in such a punk way, it's fantastic, the compositions are so off-beat and quirky.

Interested in more? There's a feature in Purple Magazine or ch-ch-check it out online.

More Moore

A cute little concept magazine accompanied the latest issue of Purple Magazine, composed by Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth in case ya don't know). It's really like a scrap book of photos Thurston has collected over the last couple of decades.
There are the requisite images of the band and coolsie mofo pics of him and Kim* together. Adorable.

There are newspaper clippings from 80's teen mags declaring that "Rock music gives you cancer kids" its a scientific fact you know. What I like the most are images like this...

...because he's added these little captions explaining some of the pictures. The caption for the above image "Me wearing an anti-imperialism crown of ridiculousness".

Funny.

*Kim Gordon, also of Sonic Youth

Dreaming of Celebrity Worship

This little treasure was sourced in a quaint op shop in suburban Melbourne. Compiled in the height of Madonna craze during the early '90's, I Dream of Madonna (By Kay Turner) is a collection of dreams different women have had of Madonna. It is completely bizarre... and totally hilarious!

The individual dreams have been sent in by Madonna super fans and each dream is accompanied by an extremely '90's style collage. The dreams are just ordinary dreams, the only common factor being that they all involve Madonna, and some in very sexual ways...

This book really is an exercise in celebrity obsession. I wonder if Madonna has any idea that this book exists? So creepy!

Why? Wye!

I took a little trip to my friends family beach house in Wye River on The Great Ocean Road. This beach house is perfect: sea shell pictures on the wall, comfy retro furniture, 1980's board games, Jazz cassette tapes, piles of craft magazines and shelves of old books. It's the perfect place to pour a glass of Muscat and whip some ass at Uno!
